What kind of medications/vaccines do I need?
(this information was taken from the Center for Disease Control’s website, for additional information see http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/india.aspx)
See a health-care provider at least 4–6 weeks before your trip to allow time for your vaccines to take effect and to start taking medicine to prevent malaria, if you need it.
Even if you have less than 4 weeks before you leave, you should still see a health-care provider for needed vaccines, anti-malaria drugs and other medications and information about how to protect yourself from illness and injury while traveling.
CDC recommends that you see a health-care provider who specializes in Travel Medicine. Find a travel medicine clinic near you. If you have a medical condition, you should also share your travel plans with any doctors you are currently seeing for other medical reasons.
Please consult your doctor before prescribing to any medication and/or if you have specific health concerns.
General Recommended Shots/Vaccines and Prices–
• Typhoid (vaccine or oral)
$20 – $25
• Hepatitis A (1 shot)
$40 – $45
• Hepatitis B (3 shots)
$40 – $45
• Malaria Pills
Dosage: Begin 2 weeks prior to leaving, continue for 6 weeks after returning home.
Where can I get my medication/vaccines?
Please consult your physician or visit your local travel agency who can make these arrangements for you.
How much luggage should I bring?
Pack lightly and leave space in your bags for gifts for friends and family back home. We also recommend that you:
• Do not carry heavy or very large suitcases. It is easier to move around from one place to another.
• Bring a suitcase/bags with wheels that roll
• Bring a waist belt to safely carry your important travel items like passports, travelers’ cheques, money etc.
• Put your initials and/or a marker differentiating your bags from others.’ Some people use ribbons, fluorescent stickers, etc…
